The Circuit Clerk:

  • Serves as clerk of the county and circuit courts
  • Receives and files all lawsuits, indictments, motions, and other related papers in all civil and criminal cases filed in the circuit or county courts
  • Issues all process including summons and subpoenas
  • Draws jurors
  • Qualifies juries
  • Keeps a record of all judgments and executions
  • Issues marriage licenses and keeps records of marriages
  • Records medical and other professional licenses
  • Registers citizens to vote and has other duties in handling elections

Absentee voting begins 45 days before each Primary/General Election.

Our office is open Monday through Friday 8am – 5pm.

Our office is also required to be open 2 Saturdays before every election day from 8am – noon.

  • Out of the County
  • Out of the Country
  • Student Away on Campus

Circuit Court hears felony criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits. Circuit Courts also hear appeals from County, Justice and Municipal courts and from administrative boards and commissions such as the Workers’ Compensation Commission and the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.

Tate County is in the 17th Circuit District.  

Circuit Court Judges are selected in non-partisan elections to serve four-year terms.

The Election Officials (the Circuit Clerk and Election Commission) are tasked with voter registration, voter roll maintenance, qualification of local candidates, appointment of poll managers, approval of ballots/testing of voting devices, conduct of elections, and certification of election results.

We are responsible for conducting National, State and County (Local) Elections.

Municipal Elections are conducted by Municipal Election Officials. Please contact your Municipal Clerk to find information for Municipal Elections and your polling place for it is different from your County Polling Place. Normally City Elections occur every four years.

The Circuit Clerk’s Office handles many tasks including:

Serve as Clerk of Circuit Court and Clerk of Record for all Criminal and Civil casesand filings that are appealed to the Mississippi Supreme Court.

To get a FREE Mississippi Voter ID card, the voter must bring any ONE of the following to
the Circuit Clerk’s ­office:
• Any expired but valid photo identity document having the voter’s name and photograph issued by
the U.S. government or any U.S. state
• A birth certificate or any other document with the voter’s full legal name, date and place of birth
• A Social Security card
• A Medicare card
• A Medicaid card
• A Mississippi Voter Registration Card
• Any of the following, as long as it includes the voter’s name and current address:
• Utility bill issued within the preceding six (6) months
• Bank statement issued within the preceding six (6) months
• Paycheck issued within the preceding six (6) months
• Government check issued within the preceding six (6) months
