The planning commission’s primary role, as its name implies, is to plan. A Planning Commission is a body of citizens that serve within local government, acting as an advisory group to the municipal governing body on issues and policies related to planning, land use regulations, and community development.
This Planning Commission has many functions. It maintains, interprets, and updates the long-range plan for county development. The Tate County Comprehensive Plan is designed as a planning tool to direct development and manage growth. Based on input from the community itself and from professionals, the plan states goals and policies that support ordinances and planning decisions. The Commission is involved in transportation planning for the county rezoning case evaluation and subdivision and site plan review. It also maintains the county’s adopted Zoning Map and Zoning Ordinance. In addition, it is responsible for processing building permits and conducting on-site inspections of general contractors in the county and sub-contractors such as plumbers, electricians, and mechanical contractors. Most of all, our goal is to always be looking ahead to plan the best future for Tate County’s citizens and their children.
